Muscat – Omantel is exploring the use of Low Earth Orbit satellite technology to extend and strengthen connectivity in Oman, including services for remote areas, maritime operations and industry, under a collaboration with China’s GalaxySpace.

The two companies will assess the technical and commercial viability of next-generation satellite services and examine how they could complement Omantel’s existing terrestrial networks.

The collaboration will include proof-of-concept trials, technical evaluations and studies of potential service models before any decision is taken on deployment or investment.

Possible applications include resilient broadband, maintaining communications in difficult-to-reach locations, enterprise and industrial services, maritime and logistics connectivity and Internet of Things applications.

The companies will also study direct-to-cell technology, which could allow mobile devices to connect directly to satellites in areas where conventional terrestrial coverage is unavailable or limited.

Eng Aladdin Baitfadhil, CEO of Omantel, said satellite capabilities were becoming an increasingly important complement to terrestrial networks as connectivity technologies evolve.

“Our collaboration with GalaxySpace reflects Omantel’s commitment to exploring emerging technologies that can strengthen the resilience, reach, and future readiness of Oman’s connectivity ecosystem,” he said.

Baitfadhil added that technical cooperation and knowledge exchange would help the company assess how satellite technology could support Oman Vision 2040, while any future services would depend on market requirements, regulation and national priorities.

Peter Huang Heping, General Manager of International Business Development at GalaxySpace, said the partnership would assess how LEO broadband and direct-to-cell technologies could help develop satellite capabilities in Oman while exploring wider regional opportunities.

GalaxySpace develops and manufactures LEO satellites and satellite internet systems. The company says it has delivered more than 40 satellites and operates an intelligent manufacturing facility capable of producing 150 annually.

It has also developed ‘Mini-Spider’, a LEO broadband test constellation used to validate satellite internet applications.

Omantel said the results of the planned trials and assessments would determine whether the collaboration progresses to potential services, commercial models or wider deployment.
