Muscat – Oman’s agriculture and fisheries sector expanded by 6.1% in the first quarter of 2026, supported by stronger agricultural production and continued investment in supply chains, official data showed.

The sector’s contribution to gross domestic product at constant prices rose to RO337.8mn, from RO318.3mn in the corresponding period of 2025, according to the Ministry of Economy’s quarterly bulletin.

Agriculture recorded the strongest performance among the sub-sectors, growing 12% year-on-year.

Fishing activity increased marginally – 0.9% – indicating broadly stable output in the maritime segment.

The combined sector accounted for 3.4% of Oman’s GDP during the quarter, up from 2.9% a year earlier.

The ministry attributed the expansion to improved agricultural and fisheries production, greater investment and measures to raise the efficiency of production and distribution networks.

The figures underline the growing role of local industries in Oman’s diversification drive, particularly as the government seeks to strengthen food security and reduce reliance on hydrocarbon revenues.

Agriculture and fisheries are among the productive sectors identified under Vision 2040 for investment, technology adoption and value-chain development.

The ministry said efforts would continue to expand the economic base, improve productivity and attract investment into activities linked to the country’s natural resources.
