Gaza, Palestine – The United Nations and World Health Organization have condemned attacks on civilians and healthcare facilities in Gaza after an Israeli strike destroyed a medical warehouse near Al Aqsa Hospital.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of WHO, said the August 1 attack destroyed essential medical supplies, including items delivered by the organisation, and damaged the hospital.

“Healthcare facilities must never be attacked or militarised,” he said in a post on X.

WHO has documented nearly 1,000 attacks on healthcare in Gaza since October 2023, resulting in more than 1,000 deaths and 1,700 injuries.

Separately, Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, condemned the killing of civilians as Gaza recorded its deadliest month of 2026.

Health authorities reported more than 150 deaths in July, the highest monthly toll since the beginning of the year, Haq said.

He also expressed concern over dwindling medical supplies, including insulin for diabetes patients, medicines for cardiovascular conditions and alcohol-based disinfectants used for infection prevention.

“More supplies required to prevent and control infections are pending Israeli approval to bring into Gaza,” Haq said.

The August 1 strike destroyed medicine warehouses attached to Al Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir El Balah. Munir Al Bursh, Director General of the Palestinian Ministry of Health, told Al Jazeera the losses were severe.

“When the occupation fights people by destroying medicines and preventing medicine from entering, it turns medicine and illness itself into a tool of war,” he said.

Gaza’s Health Ministry, which administers hospitals in the territory, said two of four storage facilities were completely destroyed and two others badly damaged, calling the attack a ‘heinous crime’ and appealing for international intervention to protect medical facilities.

Palestinian health authorities say Israeli attacks have killed more than 73,375 people and wounded at least 174,220 since October 2023.

Mass funeral of 112 killed in Gaza in 2023

Palestinians in Gaza held funeral prayers on Tuesday for 112 people recovered from under the rubble of homes destroyed during Israel’s genocidal war on the enclave.

The victims were members of the Al Hasayneh and Abu Sharia families, who were killed when the Israeli army bombed their homes while they were inside on November 23, 2023.

Thousands of Palestinians took part in the funeral in Gaza City’s Sabra neighbourhood, where the bodies were draped in Palestinian flags and placed near the ruins of the destroyed homes, according to Anadolu Agency.

The victims were set to be buried at the Baptist Cemetery in the Zeitoun neighbourhood, south of Gaza City, after the funeral procession.

The funeral is considered one of the largest in Palestinian history due to the high number of victims.

The bodies were retrieved from the rubble by civil defence teams on Saturday.

‘The victims included 40 children, 38 women and seven people with disabilities,’ the Civil Defence said in a statement.

‘The teams were unable to find 157 bodies still missing under the rubble,” said Mohammad Abu Dan, Civil Defense official.

Palestinian authorities in Gaza estimate that around 9,500 people remain under the rubble of buildings destroyed by Israel across Gaza.
