Muscat – Oman marks the World Day against Trafficking in Persons, reaffirming its commitment to international efforts against transnational crime and human rights protection. H E Sheikh Khalifa bin Ali Al Harthy, Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs and Head of the National Committee for Combating Human Trafficking, stated that human trafficking is a direct assault on human freedom and dignity. He highlighted that Royal Decree No. 78/2025 strengthens Oman’s national framework for prevention, protection, prosecution, and institutional partnership.

This year’s theme, “Trapped in the Fraud Trap,” focuses on cybercrime, where victims are lured by fake job offers and forced into online scams. Brigadier General Jamal bin Habib Al Qurashi, Director General of Inquiries and Criminal Investigation at Royal Oman Police, noted that trafficking crimes in Oman remain low and are met with firm legal action. Police recently dismantled a criminal network that tricked victims into swallowing drug capsules for smuggling, arresting members in Muscat.

The law imposes prison sentences of three to ten years and fines ranging from RO 5,000 to RO 100,000, with penalties increasing for aggravating circumstances. Authorities urge the public to verify employment offers, avoid unlicensed recruitment agencies, and report suspicious cases through official channels to protect community safety and uphold the rule of law.
