Muscat – The Public Prosecution has issued a strict advisory regarding the legal repercussions of misusing digital technology and social media. Officials state that capturing, transferring, disclosing, copying, or keeping photographs or videos of other individuals without their consent is a criminal offence.

Furthermore, the publication of digital news, photographs, or audio-visual clips with the intent to harm others is prohibited, regardless of whether the shared information is true. The authorities emphasise that responsibility begins before a user selects the “share” function, as minor clips can lead to serious criminal liability.

These actions are classified as punishable offences under the Law on Combatting Cybercrimes, specifically Article 36, paragraphs (2) and (3), as promulgated by Royal Decree 61/2026.

Offenders face severe penalties, including imprisonment for a period of three years and a fine of RO5,000, or both. The Public Prosecution continues to urge the public to maintain caution and respect the privacy of others to avoid these lasting legal consequences.
