Muscat – The Royal Oman Police (ROP) has clarified the regulations governing vehicle window tinting in the sultanate, reaffirming that motorists are allowed to tint their vehicle windows up to a maximum of 50%, while the front windshield must remain completely untinted.

In an awareness message released through its official social media platforms, the ROP said the move is aimed at helping motorists better understand the rules related to vehicle modifications and ensuring compliance with traffic regulations.

The police explained that side windows fitted with coloured glass are also permitted, provided the glass maintains a light transmission rate of at least 30%. Authorities further noted that vehicle owners may use matte paint films or wraps, provided the vehicle retains a glossy appearance.

The clarification comes as vehicle window tinting and exterior modifications continue to gain popularity among motorists, particularly during the summer months when drivers seek to reduce heat and improve cabin comfort.

Traffic authorities have repeatedly stressed that regulations governing tint levels are designed to strike a balance between motorists’ comfort and road safety requirements. Excessively dark tinting can significantly reduce visibility, especially at night and in adverse weather conditions, and may also impede the ability of law enforcement officers to identify vehicle occupants when necessary.

The ROP regularly launches awareness campaigns covering traffic safety and legal requirements for vehicle modifications as part of its efforts to promote responsible driving practices and reduce violations arising from misunderstandings of the law.

Motorists are encouraged to ensure that any tinting or modifications carried out on their vehicles conform to the approved specifications to avoid penalties and contribute to safer roads, ROP stated.
