5 Jul 2026 EA documents rare breeding of Shikra in Buraimi By OUR CORRESPONDENT

Buraimi – Environment Authority (EA) has successfully documented the breeding of the Shikra, scientifically known as Accipiter badius, for the first time in the region. This significant milestone serves as a testament to the integrity and quality of the local natural habitats protected by the authority.

The Shikra, a bird of prey native to Oman, typically nests in dense, branch-heavy trees, making documented sightings of its nests rare. The species is characterised by its impressive flight speed and distinct physical features, with females generally larger than males.

Mohammed bin Salim Al Balushi, a biodiversity specialist, noted that this discovery is a positive indicator of environmental stability and supports national efforts to safeguard local wildlife. This finding contributes to the national biodiversity database and underscores the importance of preserving natural habitats to ensure the sustainability of such species.
