Muscat – A coordinated organ donation and transplantation operation involving The Royal Hospital, Khoula Hospital and the Omani Centre for Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplantation has saved the lives of four patients, highlighting the growing capabilities of Oman’s national transplant programme.

The operation began after a patient at Khoula Hospital was declared brain dead in accordance with approved medical protocols. Following consent of the donor’s family, specialist teams initiated the medical, legal and ethical procedures required for organ donation.

Comprehensive clinical, laboratory and immunological assessments were then carried out to determine the suitability of the heart, liver and kidneys and match these with patients on the national waiting list.

The donor was transferred to The Royal Hospital, where specialised teams retrieved and transplanted the organs. The operation resulted in successful heart, liver and kidney transplants for four patients suffering from end-stage organ failure. Hospital officials confirmed that all recipients recovered well, completed rehabilitation programmes and have since been discharged.

The complex procedure brought together multidisciplinary teams, including transplant, cardiac, liver and urological surgeons, anaesthesiologists, intensive care specialists, immunologists, radiologists, laboratory technicians, nurses, transplant coordinators and ambulance services.

Dr Noureen bint Yousef Al Balushi, Director of the Omani Centre for Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplantation, said the achievement reflects the level of coordination between the country’s healthcare institutions and adherence to internationally recognised medical, legal and ethical standards.

“This process represents a distinguished national model of integration between different health institutions,” she said. “The close cooperation between The Royal Hospital, Khoula Hospital and our centre unified efforts and demonstrated the maturity of Oman’s organ donation and transplantation system.”

Dr Al Warith bin Ahmed Al Hashimi, Consultant in Liver and Pancreas Surgery and Head of the Organ Transplantation Department at The Royal Hospital, described the operation as an important milestone for the national programme.

He said one of the greatest challenges in transplantation is the limited time available to retrieve, transport and transplant organs while preserving their viability. “The success of this operation reflects the readiness of our national medical teams, clear clinical protocols and effective coordination between all participating institutions,” he said.

Both specialists highlighted the humanitarian significance of organ donation after brain death, noting that a single donor can save multiple lives. They also expressed gratitude to the donor’s family, whose decision made the life-saving transplants possible, and encouraged greater public awareness to support the continued growth of Oman’s organ donation programme.
