Salalah – Dhofar is set for a major boost in healthcare services as several strategic medical projects being implemented by the Ministry of Health approach completion, led by the new Sultan Qaboos Hospital in Salalah and a series of hospital and health centre expansion projects across the governorate.
According to Yousef bin Yaqoub Ambu Ali, Director General of Projects and Engineering Services in the ministry, the Sultan Qaboos Hospital in Salalah has surpassed 90% completion and is expected to begin operations in the last quarter of 2026.
He said the hospital is among the largest healthcare projects currently under development in the sultanate. Built on a 100,000sqm site, the seven-storey facility will have a capacity of 700 beds and comprise 3,238 rooms.
The hospital will house a wide range of specialised departments, including emergency care, medical imaging, chemotherapy, dialysis, burns treatment and rehabilitation services. It will also feature intensive care units for adults, children and newborns, in addition to educational and support-service facilities.
According to Ambu Ali, the hospital represents a significant addition to Oman’s healthcare system and will provide advanced specialised services, increase healthcare capacity and support the training and development of medical and technical personnel.

He added that other health projects across Dhofar are progressing according to schedule, with several expected to be completed in the second half of this year, further strengthening healthcare readiness and expanding access to medical services.
In the wilayat of Thumrait, work on upgrading the existing health centre into a comprehensive hospital has reached 95% completion. The project includes inpatient wards for men, women and children, isolation rooms, a dialysis unit and a range of administrative and support facilities.
Construction of the new Madhi Health Centre also in Thumrait has reached 90% completion. The facility will include 12 general clinics, a dental clinic, radiology and physiotherapy units, laboratories, a pharmacy, a health education department and supporting facilities. Completion is scheduled in the third quarter of 2026.
In Mirbat, construction of a new accident and emergency unit and dialysis facility is 60% complete and is expected to be finished in the fourth quarter of this year.
Meanwhile, work has commenced on the new Dhalkut Hospital, a 12-bed facility that will provide general clinics, pharmacy, laboratory, radiology and treatment services. The project is currently 6% complete and is expected to be finished by the end of 2027.
