Muscat – In a major medical achievement, Sultan Qaboos University Hospital (SQUH) at the University Medical City has successfully performed Oman’s first implantation of an artificial urinary sphincter in a male patient.

The pioneering procedure was carried out by a multidisciplinary medical team led by Dr Intisar bint Mohammed Al Hashmi, Consultant in Kidney and Urology Surgery at SQUH.

The artificial urinary sphincter is regarded as one of the most advanced treatment options for severe male urinary incontinence, requiring exceptional surgical precision and specialised expertise. Its successful introduction in Oman marks a significant step forward in expanding access to sophisticated urological care within the country while improving patients’ quality of life.

The milestone reflects ongoing efforts to offer highly specialised medical services and reduce the need for treatment abroad. It also underscores the hospital’s commitment to advancing healthcare through innovation, knowledge-based practice and clinical excellence, further enhancing Oman’s capacity to deliver world-class treatment across complex medical specialties, a statement said.
