New campaign targets legal literacy, family harmony

6 Jun 2026 Oman SJC rolls out legal awareness drive to strengthen family stability By OUR CORRESPONDENT

Muscat – The Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) has launched a public awareness campaign titled ‘Bil Waei Nahluha’ – With Awareness, We Solve It -as part of its efforts to enhance legal awareness and strengthen family and social stability across the sultanate.

The campaign seeks to educate members of the public on a range of legal and Sharia-related issues through simplified awareness messages addressing matters that directly affect individuals, families and society. By promoting a better understanding of rights and responsibilities, the initiative aims to encourage the peaceful resolution of disputes and foster a culture of respect for the law.

The campaign’s first awareness message focuses on inheritance distribution, stressing that the division of an estate is not a procedure that should be postponed indefinitely but a religious and legal right that protects the interests of heirs and preserves family relationships.

According to the SJC, delaying the distribution of inheritance can often lead to disputes among family members, create misunderstandings regarding ownership and rights, and in some cases result in prolonged legal conflicts. The council noted that many family disagreements begin with delays in inheritance division and eventually develop into disputes that affect family cohesion and social harmony.

The campaign emphasises that prompt settlement of inheritance matters ensures that every heir receives his or her rightful share in accordance with the Sharia and Omani law. It also helps prevent the accumulation of administrative and financial complications related to jointly owned assets, properties and investments.

The SJC urged heirs to make use of the legal and judicial channels available to settle inheritance matters fairly and efficiently, while encouraging dialogue and cooperation among family members. It highlighted that adherence to legal procedures and Sharia provisions remains the most effective way to safeguard rights and avoid future disputes.

The council reaffirmed that inheritance is more than the transfer of wealth and assets; it is a trust that must be handled with transparency, responsibility and fairness. Proper distribution, it said, contributes to preserving family ties and ensuring justice among heirs.
