Six new wind projects to drive Oman’s clean energy future

16 May 2026 Oman wind energy projects By OUR CORRESPONDENT

Muscat – Oman is stepping up its renewable energy ambitions with a new generation of wind power projects designed to strengthen energy security, reduce emissions and support sustainable economic growth.

As the sultanate advances its clean energy transition, the Ministry of Energy and Minerals is moving forward with a series of strategic wind energy developments expected to reshape the country’s electricity landscape over the coming years.

Two major projects – Dhofar Wind Power Project II and Jalan Bani Bu Ali Wind Power Project – are currently under development and scheduled for commissioning in 2027. The projects are part of Oman’s broader strategy to diversify energy sources and increase reliance on renewable resources.

The ministry has identified six additional locations for future wind energy expansion by 2030, including Duqm II, Duqm III, Mahout, Sadah, Shalim and Hallaniyat Islands, and Al Jazer. Together, the planned projects are expected to add around 1,720 megawatts of renewable electricity generation capacity.

The expansion reflects Oman’s growing focus on harnessing its natural wind resources, particularly in coastal and southern regions known for strong and consistent wind speeds. Energy experts say the projects will play a vital role in supporting industrial growth, enhancing electricity generation efficiency and reducing dependence on conventional fossil fuels.

The renewable energy drive is also aligned with Vision 2040, which prioritises sustainability, economic diversification and environmental responsibility. Officials say increasing renewable energy capacity will help attract investment, create new employment opportunities and support the development of green industries.

According to the Ministry of Energy and Minerals, renewable energy contributed 9.26% of Oman’s total electricity generation in 2025, marking continued progress in the country’s transition towards a cleaner and more balanced energy mix.

The upcoming projects are expected to further position Oman as one of the region’s emerging leaders in renewable and sustainable energy development.
