Muscat – The Ministry of Information (MoI) is preparing to release a documentary titled Dr Thoms, chronicling the life and legacy of Dr Wells Thoms, one of the most prominent figures associated with the history of healthcare services in Oman.

The film blends historical narration with dramatised re-enactments, rare archival material and on-location filming in Oman and the United States.

The documentary traces the early life of Dr Thoms, highlighting how his exposure to the suffering of patients with leprosy and other infectious diseases inspired his lifelong commitment to medical and humanitarian work in Oman.

It also explores key milestones in his career, including the development of Al Rahma Hospital, the launch of specialised initiatives for the treatment of infectious diseases, his medical outreach journeys to various wilayats, and his close ties with Omani society.

The film features testimonies and interviews with researchers, academics and figures linked to healthcare services in Oman, alongside exclusive interviews with members of Dr Thoms’ family and academics in the United States.

Filming took place in the US states of Florida, Kansas and Michigan, documenting aspects of his professional and family life.

Colour grading and sound mixing were completed at specialised studios in London.

Dr Thoms aims to highlight the legacy of a figure who left a lasting imprint on Oman’s collective memory through a documentary that combines history, drama and a strong human dimension, while documenting an important chapter in the development of the country’s healthcare sector.
