Muscat – The Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning will launch the Greater Muscat Structural Plan on Tuesday under the patronage of H H Sayyid Bilarab bin Haitham Al Said, Minister of State and Governor of Muscat.

The plan represents a major milestone in guiding the capital’s long-term urban development, offering a comprehensive spatial and developmental framework designed to accommodate population growth, attract investment and strengthen the economy.

Covering an area stretching from Muttrah in the east to Barka in the west, the plan spans more than 100km of coastline and a total area of 137,218 hectares over a distance of 80km. It sets out a clear vision for sustainable urban expansion while preserving Muscat’s natural and cultural assets.

A central feature of the plan is development of an integrated, multi-modal transport network aimed at improving mobility, enhancing service quality and easing congestion. The strategy includes introduction of advanced public transport systems, including metro lines, supported by modern infrastructure that will contribute to transforming Muscat into a smart and connected city.

The plan also prioritises environmental sustainability, with extensive green spaces, nature reserves and climate-resilient infrastructure forming key components. Pedestrian-friendly streets and dedicated walking pathways are designed to promote healthier and more active lifestyles.

In addition, the framework emphasises inclusive urban development by ensuring accessibility to services and facilities for citizens, residents and visitors alike, while encouraging community participation and innovation.

With its focus on integrated infrastructure, vibrant waterfronts and high-quality urban spaces, the Greater Muscat Structural Plan aims to position the capital as a leading economic and tourism destination in the region.

Officials said the initiative is aligned with Oman Vision 2040 and reflects the sultanate’s commitment to sustainable growth, efficient land use and enhanced quality of life.
