Muscat – The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources (MAFWR) has launched a programme to rehabilitate 121 aflaj systems damaged by declining rainfall across several governorates in the sultanate, as part of wider efforts to strengthen water sustainability and support food security.

According to the ministry, the programme focuses on restoring aflaj and wells affected by changing climatic conditions and reduced water flow. The rehabilitation work aims to improve the efficiency of traditional irrigation channels, ensure reliable water supply for farms and communities, and preserve one of Oman’s most important cultural and agricultural assets.

The first phase of the project has already been tendered and covers several governorates. Works include the rehabilitation of 12 aflaj each in North Batinah and North Sharqiyah, 18 in South Sharqiyah, three in Buraimi and one falaj in Musandam.

The second phase, currently under preparation, will expand the programme to additional areas. Plans include restoring 38 aflaj in South Batinah, 19 in Dakhl-iyah, and nine each in Dhahirah and Muscat governorate.

The ministry said the project is being implemented in cooperation with relevant government bodies and local stakeholders to ensure the sustainability of water resources and the long-term viability of aflaj irrigation systems.

Officials stressed that restoring damaged aflaj not only supports agricultural productivity but also helps safeguard Oman’s historic irrigation heritage, which has sustained farming communities for centuries.
