Muscat – Oman has anticipated risks linked to geopolitical tensions and the Gulf region’s reliance on desalination, a senior official said on Tuesday.

Eng Saud Al Shidhani, Director General of Water and Sanitation at the Authority for Public Services Regulation, said the risks were identified early under the National Water Strategy.

Speaking at a media briefing, he said several strategic projects are being implemented to strengthen water security. These include the utilisation of water from Wadi Dayqah Dam and the expansion of storage capacity across the sultanate.

Work is also under way to develop underground water storage systems and explore additional groundwater sources for use during emergencies.
