ROP warns of hidden dangers in rain-filled puddles

Muscat – The Royal Oman Police (ROP) has urged the public to exercise caution around puddles and rain-filled potholes following the spell of heavy rainfall in several parts of the sultanate.

In a safety advisory issued through its official platforms, the ROP warned that what may appear to be a shallow puddle could in fact conceal a deep hole filled with rainwater, posing a serious threat to life. Authorities explained that such hazards are often difficult to detect, particularly in unpaved roads, construction zones and older neighbourhoods where rainwater may collect in hidden pits or damaged ground surfaces.

The police stressed that children are especially vulnerable, as they may approach puddles out of curiosity without realising the potential danger. In some cases, the ground beneath the water may be unstable or significantly deeper than it appears, increasing the risk of slipping, falling or becoming trapped.

The warning comes as parts of Oman continue to experience unstable weather conditions, which have resulted in rainfall of varying intensity across a number of governorates. Heavy rain can erode road surfaces, expose underground cavities and create sudden depressions that quickly fill with water, the ROP stated.

Motorists have also been advised to remain vigilant and avoid driving through standing water, as hidden holes or damaged road surfaces could pose risks to vehicles and passengers. Drivers are urged to reduce speed in affected areas and pay close attention to road conditions.

The ROP called on citizens and residents to prioritise safety, keep children away from rainwater pools and report hazardous locations to the relevant authorities to help prevent accidents.

‘Stay alert and keep away from standing water,’ the ROP said, stressing that vigilance remains essential during and after periods of heavy rain.
