Nizwa – Work on the development of Misfat Al Abriyeen in Dakhliyah governorate has reached 39% completion, with the project valued at more than RO810,000.

The project, implemented by the Dakhliyah governorate, is designed to improve public services, strengthen domestic tourism and reinforce Misfat Al Abriyeen’s position as one of Oman’s leading heritage tourism destinations, while generating greater economic returns from the tourism sector.

The development includes a range of tourism and infrastructure upgrades aimed at enhancing the visitor experience while preserving the heritage character of the historic village. Key works include the construction of pedestrian walkways, installation of heritage-style lighting, improved directional signage with maps of key attractions and facilities, and the development of dedicated parking areas for visitors.

Sheikh Suleiman bin Saeed Al Azri, Wali of Al Hamra, said the progress achieved reflects the success of cooperation between government entities, the private sector and the local community in supporting sustainable heritage and nature-based tourism.

He said the relevant authorities continue to enhance tourism infrastructure and supporting services to improve the visitor experience and increase the village’s appeal to both domestic and international tourists.

“The next phase will witness greater coordination and collaboration among all partners to support development and tourism projects, further strengthening Misfat Al Abriyeen’s position as a leading model of a sustainable tourist village at the global level,” he said.

Abdul Rahman bin Saleh Al Abri, a member of the tourism working group for Misfat Al Abriyeen, said the team is committed to providing visitors with an integrated tourism experience through guided heritage, cultural and agricultural tours.

Among the village’s key attractions are the Omani Honey House, the Misfat Al Abriyeen Museum and Seraj House, which showcase the area’s rich cultural heritage and traditional lifestyle.

He added that the village is home to eight licensed tourist lodges, offering visitors a variety of accommodation options, while mountain camping, adventure activities and outdoor tourism programmes continue to attract increasing numbers of visitors.

The tourism working group also promotes the destination through the Visit Misfat digital platform, which highlights the village’s cultural, natural and tourism assets.

Al Abri said one of the village’s defining strengths is its commitment to cultural and environmental sustainability, supported by the active participation of the local community. Residents contribute by preparing traditional meals, organising tours, guiding visitors and providing authentic cultural experiences.

Misfat Al Abriyeen gained international recognition in 2021 when it was selected among the Best Tourism Villages by the UN Tourism, reflecting its successful balance between heritage conservation, community participation and sustainable tourism development.
