Omani student’s innovation turns noise into electricity

Muscat – Imagine if the constant noise from busy roads, factories and crowded public spaces could be converted into electricity instead of simply fading into the air. That idea inspired Omani engineering student Amna Kayed Al Jabri to develop a renewable energy system that transforms noise pollution into usable electrical power, an invention that has now taken her onto the international stage.

The project is designed to capture sound from high-noise environments and convert it into clean electricity through an innovative energy conversion process. By harnessing energy that would otherwise be wasted, the technology could contribute to renewable energy generation while reducing reliance on conventional power sources.

“The idea came to me during my final year of high school while studying sound waves in physics,” Amna told Muscat Daily. “I learnt that sound is a form of energy and asked myself, ‘If sound contains energy, why can’t we convert it into electricity?'”

That question sparked years of research and experimentation. Through extensive study and engineering design, Amna developed a system that converts sound energy into heat before using thermoelectric technology to produce electricity. While the technical details remain confidential to protect the innovation, she said the concept demonstrates how science can be used to tackle environmental challenges in new ways.

Beyond renewable energy generation, Amna believes the technology could have practical applications in sectors such as healthcare. It could help power small medical devices and sensors, particularly in remote areas where access to reliable electricity is limited. The concept could also support wider efforts to develop sustainable energy solutions.

Turning the idea into a working project was far from straightforward. Amna said finding suitable materials, refining the design and identifying the most effective applications required extensive testing and repeated improvements.

“Every challenge taught me something new and encouraged me to make the project better,” she said.

She credited her family and mentors, particularly academics at the University of Technology and Applied Sciences – Shinas, for supporting her throughout the project.

“Their encouragement gave me the confidence to continue, especially during the most difficult stages.”

Her work has now earned international recognition, with Amna representing Oman at the 67th London International Youth Science Forum being held from July 19 to August 1.

The annual forum brings together outstanding young scientists from around the world to present research, exchange ideas and engage with leading experts.

Describing her participation as “a dream come true”, Amna said she hopes the experience will deepen her scientific knowledge, strengthen her research skills and help her build international collaborations.

She also has a message for other young Omanis with ambitions to innovate. “Every successful project starts with a simple idea,” she said. “With determination, perseverance and a willingness to learn, that idea can become something that benefits Oman and the world.”
