Muscat – The Directorate General of Oman Customs has reaffirmed its role in protecting the national economy from commercial fraud and tax evasion, describing both as major threats to market integrity, fair competition and public revenues.

In a statement, Maj Nasser bin Khalfan Al Khatri, Head of the Public Relations and Media Department at the directorate, said commercial fraud and tax evasion undermine economic development and require sustained regulatory efforts to address.

Maj Al Khatri noted that commercial fraud takes several forms, including trademark infringement, falsification of country-of-origin information and the import or sale of products that fail to meet approved standards.

He informed that such practices not only harm consumers but also weaken confidence in markets and affect the investment climate.

According to Maj Al Khatri, Oman Customs serves as the first line of defence against these violations through a regulatory framework supported by legislation, modern technologies and trained national personnel.

He said customs authorities work to strengthen controls at border crossings and prevent counterfeit and non-compliant goods from entering the local market.

On tax evasion, Maj Al Khatri said the issue remains a significant economic challenge due to its direct impact on state revenues. He added that customs authorities have enhanced monitoring and verification procedures, including auditing customs declarations, reviewing invoices and assessing declared values of imported goods.

The directorate also monitors attempts to evade duties through incorrect classification of goods or concealment of cargo, he said.

Maj Al Khatri noted that Oman Customs relies on advanced electronic systems, analytical databases and information-sharing mechanisms with relevant authorities to detect and prevent violations.

According to him, Oman Customs follows a balanced approach that facilitates legitimate trade while maintaining strict oversight of illegal activities. This includes the application of risk management systems, the use of advanced inspection technologies and closer regional and international cooperation to combat cross-border commercial fraud and tax evasion.

Maj Al Khatri added that cooperation with the private sector and the wider community remains a key component of compliance efforts. The directorate continues to raise awareness on customs regulations and procedures while encouraging importers and traders to adhere to applicable laws.
