Muscat – In a first-of-its-kind initiative, Mwasalat offered free bus rides on all city routes in Muscat and Salalah on Friday to mark World Public Transport Day, attracting nearly 14,000 passengers.

Company officials said the full-day programme aimed to encourage greater use of public transport across the sultanate.

A senior Mwasalat official said, “This initiative reflects our commitment to promoting sustainable mobility and making public transport more accessible to residents and visitors. By offering free rides in the two cities, we hope more people experience the convenience, affordability and efficiency of our services.”

Passengers in areas including Ruwi, Muttrah corniche, Amerat and Seeb welcomed the move. Queues were reported from early morning at the Ruwi bus station and along the corniche.

Arun Verma, who travelled from Ruwi, said, “This is a fantastic initiative. It not only saves money but also encourages people like me to choose buses more often over private cars.”

Verma, who has lived in Oman for two years, said he used the opportunity to travel with his five-year-old son. “I am using this opportunity to teach my child about Muscat’s routes. It’s fast, easy, and a great way for him to learn navigation in the city,” he said.

Arshad Khan described the service as efficient. “The buses are clean, timely and comfortable. Free rides will definitely motivate more residents to try public transport,” he said, adding that he travelled from Ghala to Ruwi and later to Seeb with friends.

Khalid Al Amri, who travelled from Amerat with his brother, said he usually uses the bus only during heavy rains or for airport trips. “I found the service very good. The routes are clear and smooth. Seats are spacious and it is easy to commute,” he said.

The initiative was extended to Salalah alongside Muscat. While Mwasalat has previously introduced limited free services during special events, this marked the first time a city-wide free ride programme was implemented across all routes in both cities.
