Samail – A new initiative aimed at strengthening national identity and promoting sustainable practices among students was launched in the governorate of Dakhliyah at Soumraah Basic Education School, in collaboration with Abu Qatada Al Ansari School on Wednesday.
The project, titled ‘Omani Identity and Omani Character’, was inaugurated at Soumara School under the patronage of Ali bin Abdullah Al Harthy, Director General of the Directorate General of Education in Dakhliyah.
The initiative seeks to reinforce students’ connection to their national identity while encouraging positive behaviours rooted in authentic Omani values. It also aims to cultivate a culture of sustainability in daily life through practical initiatives such as responsible resource consumption, recycling and school agriculture, in line with national efforts to build a more environmentally aware and sustainable society.
The launch ceremony featured a visual presentation highlighting the concepts of identity and sustainability and their impact on society, in addition to a series of student-led performances. The event also included the official inauguration of the project and the opening of an art carpet exhibition.
Students showcased several initiatives focusing on recycling, school farming and energy conservation, with participation from parents and members of the local community — reflecting the school’s role in strengthening community partnerships and promoting environmental awareness.
Administrations of both schools emphasised that the project represents a qualitative step towards developing well-rounded students by integrating national identity with environmentally responsible behaviour, helping to nurture a generation proud of its values and aware of its role in safeguarding and advancing the nation’s achievements.
Maida bint Tuwair Al Busaidiya, principal of Soumara School, said the project reflects the school’s commitment to building comprehensive awareness among students.
“The Omani Identity and Omani Character project embodies our vision of nurturing students who take pride in their national identity while practising sustainability in their daily lives,” she said. “We aim to transform these concepts into everyday behaviour within the school and the wider community, enabling students to become active partners in building a more conscious and sustainable future.”
