Al Hamra – Jabal Shams in the wilayat of Al Hamra is witnessing a major development phase with the implementation of strategic projects worth more than RO31mn aimed at strengthening the area’s tourism and economic potential. The initiatives target the development of Oman’s highest mountain and one of the country’s most prominent natural attractions.

The projects include the Jabal Shams – Grand Canyon Front Project, valued at around RO11mn and covering an area of approximately 145,000sqm. The project will feature viewing platforms overlooking the dramatic mountain gorge, a mountain walkway, an open-air theatre and a cultural park, all designed to enhance visitor experience and increase the destination’s appeal.

The development is expected to generate annual returns of about RO1.26mn, create 309 job opportunities and open up 32 investment prospects in tourism and related service sectors.

Another major component is the completion of the 32km Jabal Shams road at a cost of RO20.2mn. The project aims to improve connectivity between mountainous areas and tourist sites and facilitate easier access for visitors. The road will also include 172 lighting poles to enhance traffic safety and improve service levels along the route.

The first phase of the projects is currently under implementation, while the second phase will commence immediately after completion of the initial stage, according to Sulaiman bin Hamad Al Sunaidi, Director General of Municipality of Dakhliyah.

Al Sunaidi said the projects represent an important step in the development of Jabal Shams and will further strengthen its status as a unique tourism destination in Oman. He noted that the mountain is renowned for its exceptional natural features and spectacular panoramic views of the vast gorge often referred to as the ‘Grand Canyon of Oman’.

Officials say the initiatives are expected to stimulate tourism and economic activity in Al Hamra and across Dakhliyah governorate by supporting sectors such as hospitality, tourism services and traditional crafts, while enhancing the participation of the local community in development efforts.
