Muscat – Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) has launched a platform called Central Number Portability System that allows mobile subscribers to switch between service providers while keeping their existing phone numbers.
TRA said the system supports the country’s digital transformation efforts and is designed to make the transfer process faster and more efficient. The mechanism enables users to port their numbers within minutes, following procedures aligned with global best practices.
Officials said the platform creates a more flexible and competitive market by making it easier for subscribers to choose their preferred operator. It also provides a regulatory framework to manage number portability and ensure compliance by service providers.
To complete a transfer, subscribers must settle any outstanding payments with their current operator before visiting the new provider to fill out the transfer form. They must then confirm the request through a text message and keep their old SIM card active until the service is suspended. The new SIM card can be inserted once the termination is confirmed.
TRA expects the system to support greater customer satisfaction by giving users more flexibility in selecting telecom services.
The platform is expected to encourage investment by boosting competition and aligning the sector with international standards.
