Muscat – The development of the historic Maqlab Island, also known as Telegraph Island, in Musandam has reached 50% completion, Musandam Municipality announced.

The project aligns with the governorate’s efforts to achieve comprehensive economic development and enhance sustainable tourism.

Ahmed Mohammed al Shehhi, Director of the Projects Department at Musandam Municipality, said the initiative aims to revive the island’s historical significance, boost eco-tourism, create employment opportunities, and preserve the local environment and biodiversity – particularly its coral reefs.

“The Telegraph Island project is a unique opportunity to bridge the past with the present by investing in heritage for tourism and cultural development. It seeks to balance preservation with renewal, transforming the island into a regional and international attraction that narrates a long-forgotten chapter of maritime communications,” Shehhi said.

He explained that the development includes a 731sqm multi-use hall, a 130sqm service building, an 8m long and 2.5m wide marine landing platform with a floating system, a guard room with full amenities, an electricity generator building with fuel tanks, and a mountain walkway providing access to all island facilities. Two photo platforms overlooking key landmarks will also be constructed.

Telegraph Island holds a significant place in regional history for being the first site of modern communications line in the Middle East. Named after the submarine cable that once stretched from Mumbai to Basra, the island served as a transmission station in 1864, marking the dawn of modern communication in the region.

Located in Khor Sham, wilayat Khasab, the island’s rugged topography, strategic location among marine creeks, and rich heritage continue to attract tourists and adventure seekers alike.
