Moscow, Russia – Oman and Russia have called for peaceful resolutions to international disputes and expressed deep concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza during His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik’s state visit to the Russian Federation on April 21 and 22.

A joint statement issued following the visit highlighted official talks between His Majesty the Sultan and President Vladimir Putin held at Kremlin Palace focusing on a wide range of bilateral and global issues. The two leaders reiterated their commitment to resolving conflicts through dialogue and diplomatic means in line with international law and the Charter of the United Nations.

The talks highlighted the deteriorating situation in Gaza, with both leaders affirming support for international efforts to achieve an immediate and lasting ceasefire. They stressed the need to facilitate  delivery of humanitarian aid, begin reconstruction and ensure the return of displaced persons. The leaders also called for a full withdrawal of occupying forces from the Gaza Strip and other Palestinian territories.

The two sides reaffirmed their support for a just and comprehensive solution to the Palestinian issue, based on the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital in accordance with relevant international resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative.

On bilateral matters, the two leaders expressed satisfaction with progress made in recent years and agreed to expand cooperation in trade, investment and development. They underlined the importance of strengthening economic ties and increasing communication between relevant authorities to follow up on joint programmes.

His Majesty the Sultan and President Putin welcomed the signing of several memoranda of understanding across key sectors. They also agreed to establish a joint economic committee and announced mutual exemption of entry visas for citizens of both countries.

His Majesty the Sultan expressed appreciation for the hospitality extended by President Putin and the Russian government to him. His Majesty invited the Russian leader to visit Oman, which was accepted.
