Muscat – With the long awaited Eid holidays ahead of us, many in Oman are looking forward to some fun in the sun. If you’re planning a trip to the beach, you might be tempted to hop onto a banana boat – the bright, inflatable ride that promises an adrenaline rush as it bounces over the waves. But before you do, it’s worth asking: just how safe is this thrill ride?
Banana boat rides are a common sight at beach resorts, drawing adventurers with their playful design and high-speed excitement. However, safety experts warn that while the experience can be exhilarating, it can also be dangerous—especially for those who are not confident swimmers. Tariq al Khabouri, founder of the Oman Disabled Divers Association, stresses that even strong swimmers should be cautious. “Once you’re tossed into deep waters, anything can happen. Life jackets should be non-negotiable, and operators must ensure they fit properly before allowing anyone on board.”
Another novice rider Uddhav Joshi described how his ill-fitting life jacket made things worse, slipping off as he struggled to stay afloat. “I was lucky my dad was nearby. He kept me above water until we could reach the boat,” he said.
Authorities in Oman have safety regulations in place to prevent such incidents. Water sports operators are required to provide life jackets for all participants, ensure that boats are driven at safe speeds, and have trained staff on hand for emergencies. Riders, too, are urged to take responsibility for their safety—checking their life jackets, holding on tight, and communicating with the boat driver if they feel uncomfortable at any point.
For those eager to experience the ride, two of the best spots in Muscat are Al Mouj Beach and Marina Bandar al Rowdha. These locations offer well-regulated water sports with experienced operators who prioritise safety. At both sites, you’ll find stunning coastal views and the perfect setting for a day of adventure.
Banana boat rides aren’t just about the thrill—they also offer surprising health benefits. Keeping balance on the bouncing raft works your core muscles, burns calories, and even boosts cardiovascular health by improving circulation. Plus, it’s a fantastic way to bond with family and friends while soaking in the beauty of Oman’s waters.
So, are you ready to take the plunge? If yes, make sure your life jacket fits snugly, hold on tight, and enjoy the ride. After all, the best adventures are the ones that come with a splash—but not a scare!
