Muscat – Ministry of Heritage and Tourism (MHT) is restoring historic forts in Suwaiq, North Batinah, as part of its efforts to safeguard the country’s archaeological landmarks.
Hassan Sulaiman al Jabri, Director of the Heritage and Tourism Department in North Batinah, said work has been completed on Sur al Maghabsha, while restoration of Sur al Hilal is expected to finish this year.
The project involves repairs to the walls and towers of both structures.
Sur al Maghabsha, built during the reign of Sayyid Said bin Sultan al Busaidi (1807-1856), is a rectangular fortress measuring 45m by 44m, with four cylindrical towers, each three storeys high.
Sur al Hilal, dating back to the 19th century, features a square structure with a two-storey guard entrance and two large cannons.
“Restoring these monuments helps preserve and document history, allowing future generations to learn about them while also promoting domestic tourism,” Jabri said.
“Castles and forts remain key attractions and symbols of cultural identity.”
MHT stated that its restoration efforts aim to prevent the deterioration of Oman’s historical sites, ensuring their survival while strengthening their role in tourism development.
