Muscat – Oman secured six medals at the Special Olympics World Winter Games held in Turin, Italy from March 8 to 15. One of the world’s largest sporting and humanitarian gatherings, the event brought together nearly 1,500 athletes from 98 countries, promoting inclusion, acceptance and unity.

Hussam bin Nasser al Amri led Oman’s campaign, claiming gold in the 333m short track speed skating event and silver in the 222m race. Retaj bint Sultan al Salmiya won bronze medals in the 111m and 222m speed skating events, while Al Baraa bin Malik al Battashi secured bronze in cross-country skiing. Ameera bint Abdulaziz al Raisi added to the tally with a bronze in the 100m speed skating competition.

Amri attributed his success to his coach’s guidance and support. “I am proud to represent Oman at such a prestigious event,” he said. His coach, Safwan bin Abdullah al Balushi, highlighted the dedication required to success. “Winning gold demanded intense training, focus and resilience. Beyond competition, such achievements contribute to the personal development of athletes with intellectual disabilities,” he said.

Faisal bin Hamoud al Harrasi, Deputy Head of Mission, acknowledged the collective effort behind the medals. “These achievements prove that nothing can stand in the way of success for people with intellectual disabilities,” he said. “Such accomplishments inspire more individuals to participate in sports, reinforcing the message that sports are for everyone.”

Oman’s delegation included six athletes with intellectual disabilities, six coaches and four administrators. The team competed in snow running, cross-country skiing and speed skating events.
