Muscat – Oman is set to establish a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) station as part of its commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. The announcement was made during launch of new electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at the cargo terminal of Muscat International Airport last week, signalling another significant step in the nation’s sustainability journey.

Hamoud bin Musabah al Alawi, Acting CEO of Oman Airports, said the new EV charging stations are part of a broader strategy to cut carbon emissions and improve air quality at the airport. “Introduction of sustainable practices such as electric vehicles and renewable energy solutions is a critical part of our strategy to make aviation more environmentally friendly,” he said.

Alawi also confirmed plans for a SAF production station to further reduce emissions from the aviation sector and help Oman meet its broader environmental goals.

The launch event was attended by Dr Abdullah bin Ali al Amri, Chairman of Environment Authority, who highlighted the importance of the initiative in achieving Oman’s net-zero targets. He said Oman was taking a leading role in reducing carbon emissions and fulfilling its nationally determined contributions under global climate agreements.

Amri also referenced the Environment Authority’s ‘Neutrality 3’ initiative launched in December 2024, which focuses on cutting emissions across sectors such as energy, industry, transport and construction. This, he noted, aligns with Oman’s broader goal of achieving net-zero emissions across multiple industries.
