Muscat – Football fans across Oman were deeply saddened by the untimely death of former international footballer Abdul Salam Amer al Mukhaini, who died on Tuesday at the age of 37.
Widely recognised for his athleticism on the field and warmth off it, Mukhaini leaves behind a legacy cherished by fans and teammates. His journey from humble beginnings in Dhofar to a celebrated sports star in the Gulf region earned him admiration as a player who epitomised passion and perseverance.
In a statement, Oman Football Association said, ‘OFA extends its sincere condolences and heartfelt sympathies to the family of our former national football team player Abdul Salam Amer al Mukhaini. May God forgive him and may His mercy and blessings be upon his family and loved ones.’
Mukhaini’s career began in 2010 with Dhofar Club, setting the stage for exciting tenures with clubs in the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. His most notable achievements include a league title campaign with Kuwait Club, His Majesty’s Cup for Al Arouba and three Oman Super Cup victories. On the international stage, Mukhaini represented Oman in the Gulf Cup, Asian Cup qualifiers and FIFA World Cup qualifiers, earning reputation as one of Oman’s finest defenders.
Tributes poured in from across the football community. Former teammate Mohammed al Sinani described Mukhaini as a “rare player” with a kind heart. “His smile never left him,” Sinani said. “He was a hard-working player, always determined, diligent and spontaneous.”
Reflecting on Mukhaini’s relentless spirit and inspirational role, longtime friend Khalid al Siyabi said, “He was a true fighter and a role model for many of us.”
Neighbour Yousuf al Sinani shared his grief: “May God have mercy on our dear friend and brother. We ask that He forgive him and grant peace to his soul. My sincere condolences to his family and all those who knew him. To Allah we belong and to Him we shall return.”
Summing up Mukhaini’s legacy, Saeed al Asiri said, “He will be remembered not just as a player but as a symbol of perseverance, kindness and unwavering dedication to the game.”
Mukhaini’s remarkable career and kind-hearted nature have left an indelible mark in Oman’s football history. His absence will be profoundly felt, but his legacy will live on in the hearts of football fans.
