Muscat – Oman has bolstered its earthquake monitoring capabilities with the establishment of 26 advanced seismic stations across the sultanate and an average of 500 seismic events being recorded annually.
Equipped with cutting-edge technology, these stations enhance the sultanate’s ability to detect and track seismic activity locally and globally, according to Dr Issa al Hussein, Director of Earthquake Monitoring Centre (EMC) at Sultan Qaboos University.
Speaking to Muscat Daily, Hussein stressed the importance of the monitoring network in swiftly detecting tremors and ensuring public safety. He noted that the 2.5-magnitude earthquake near Muscat earlier this week, though shallow and perceptible to residents, caused no damage to infrastructure.
“Oman records an average of 500 earthquakes annually, with most originating in the Zagros Mountains, the Sea of Oman, the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Aden. A smaller number of tremors are recorded in the Oman Mountains and along the Masirah Fault. While these quakes are typically light to moderate, the monitoring system evaluates potential risks and impacts,” he explained.
In addition to the 26 monitoring stations, Oman’s network includes nearly 100 seismology stations, of which 75 are fully operational. The remaining 25 are in the process of installation. Muscat has 22 instruments, and plans are underway to expand the network further, particularly in urban areas for more precise monitoring.
EMC also plays a vital role in public education, regularly organising workshops and lectures on earthquake preparedness. “Last year, Muscat and surrounding areas experienced five noticeable earthquakes, none of which caused damage.”
Hussein highlighted efforts to engage the younger generation, with hundreds of students visiting the centre annually to learn about seismic activities and disaster response.
“The centre remains committed to spreading awareness on earthquake preparedness, ensuring that both the public and private sectors are equipped to respond effectively to seismic events,” Hussein said.
