Muscat – A tragic accident in Birkat al Mouz on Tuesday left three dead and nine injured sparking widespread public concern.

A statement issued by Civil Defence and Ambulance Authority (CDAA) said, ‘Rescue teams from Dakhliyah responded to a serious collision between a bus and a truck in Birkat al Mouz, approximately 130km from Muscat on the Muscat-Nizwa-Jabal Akhdar highway.’

The accident claimed the lives of three individuals, while nine others sustained injuries ranging from moderate to critical. The injured were immediately transported to hospital for treatment.

Authorities have commenced an investigation into the accident to ascertain the cause.

The accident prompted voices of concern and frustration. Many citizens called for immediate action from the authorities to prevent accidents on the Muscat- Jabal Akhdar road, particularly around Birkat al Mouz.

Nizwa resident Khaled al Yaqoubi expressed his concern about the road’s safety, pointing out that it has been a significant route since 2001. He emphasised the fact that the area has seen sharp increase in traffic, especially due to its role in connecting towns like Mudhaibi and Ibra.

According to Yaqoubi, the road is frequently congested and the number of accidents is alarmingly high. He urged the authorities to find a quick solution, including dualisation of the road which would help alleviate  congestion and improve safety.

Abu Nasser, another Nizwa resident, echoed Yaqoubi’s concern. He specifically called for expedited implementation of the Izki-Farq dual carriageway project, a long-discussed proposal to widen and upgrade the road. It would reduce risk of accidents like the one on Tuesday; the current single-lane road is not adequate for the high volume of traffic passing through.

Regarding the movement of trucks on the road, particularly during peak hours, Salem al Kalbani suggested authorities impose restrictions on truck movement during morning and afternoon hours when the road is most congested due to proximity to schools, colleges and government offices. Kalbani attributed significant risk to students, teachers and other road users from heavy trucks on this route.

In response to the accident, CDAA urged motorists to adhere to traffic regulations and prioritise road safety.

Authorities are conducting an investigation to determine the cause of the collision, which could lead to further safety measures being implemented. Public concern, however, remains high with many demanding swift and decisive action.
