Buraimi – Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources (MAFWR) has launched an initiative called ‘Improving the Methods of Sheltering Rural Women’s Animals’ in Buraimi governorate. It aims to support and empower rural women in livestock breeding.
An official at MAFWR stated that the project will introduce advanced shelter systems for 15 female livestock breeders, equipping them with the necessary skills to improve their efficiency in animal husbandry.
The initiative seeks to enhance rural women’s capabilities, enabling them to achieve self-sufficiency in meat production, improve the nutritional standards of Omani families, and preserve local livestock breeds essential for sustainable development.
The three-year project includes establishment of advanced pens for raising and propagating local breeds of goats and sheep using modern technologies.
The pens have been distributed among 15 rural families: five in wilayat of Buraimi, nine in Mahdha and one in Al Sunaynah.
The project is part of the ministry’s broader efforts to support rural economic development and livestock sustainability.
In 2021, MAFWR launched a programme called Rifi in coordination with Development Bank with the objective of supporting and promoting entrepreneurship among rural women. Rifi aims to empower rural women and entrepreneurs by enhancing capacity, boosting production, promo- ting food security and creating self-employment opportunities. Projects initiated through Rifi include establishment of 13 eco-friendly greenhouses, a beekeeping project that trained 100 women, and launch of production and marketing activities under the brand name ‘From My Home’.
