Flowers from the Same Garden

8 Dec 2024 By ANIRBAN RAY

Muscat – A first-time solo exhibition in Oman by noted Korean artist Oh Myung Hee explores the themes of interconnectedness, cultural memory, and shared humanity, in celebration of the cycles of life, resilience, and the universal experiences of people.

The exhibition opened at the Bait Muzna Gallery, in collaboration with Metamorphosis Art Projects London last Tuesday. The month-long exhibition ‘We Are All Flowers from the Same Garden’ is being held under the patronage of H H Dr Sayyida Mona bint Fahad al Said. It is a poetic meditation on the cycles of life, the perpetual rebirth of nature, and the enduring hope that unites us all.

The artist reflects on collective memory, family, and the interconnectedness of all living beings. Her exploration of the Tree of Life symbolises the unity of existence, while her pieces exude a quiet yet powerful hope and joy that speaks to the human spirit’s resilience.

Oh Myung Hee, a celebrated figure in the global art world, is known for her evocative three-dimensional works, videos, and multimedia installations that combine traditional Korean materials such as mother-of-pearl, eggshell, and lacquer with contemporary themes. Her work has been exhibited internationally, including The Nairobi National Museum in Kenya, Saatchi Gallery London, the 59th Venice Biennale, and Museum San, Wonju Korea.

Now, she brings her visionary art to Oman, marking a significant moment in cross-cultural exchange between South Korea and the Middle East.

“To me art is a journey to explore the true essence of life. Art has the power to show the beauty that grows even in tough times and that shines in darkness. This is my first ever solo exhibition in Oman and I am thankful to everyone,” says Oh Myung Hee.

This exhibition is particularly timely as it celebrates 50 years of diplomatic relations between South Korea and Oman. H E Kiejoo Kim, Ambassador of South Korea, inaugurated the exhibition.

The gallery’s founder H H Dr Sayyida Mona bint Fahad al Said explained that the exhibition sought to foster greater cultural understanding between the two nations. Through Oh Myung Hee’s art, the exhibition aims to build bridges between South Korean and Omani audiences, highlighting shared values, heritage, and the collective human experience.

“We are honoured to present Oh Myung Hee’s works at Bait Muzna Gallery. This exhibition serves as a powerful reminder that despite our differences, we are all connected through our shared humanity.”

Oh Myung Hee will lead workshops at Bait Muzna Gallery, offering visitors the chance to explore traditional Korean art techniques, including the use of mother-of-pearl and lacquer. These workshops will provide a unique hands-on experience, allowing participants to engage more deeply with the artist’s work and process.

According to Laila al Bellucci, director of Bait Muzna Gallery, Professor Oh Myung Hee’s art in Oman is more than an exhibition – it’s a bridge between cultures. “Her work, a fusion of Korean tradition and contemporary innovation, has sparked incredible enthusiasm, captivating audiences and sparking conversations that cross borders. In bringing her art to Oman, we’re not just showcasing creativity; we’re celebrating the universal language that connects us all,” she said.
