Women’s badminton tournament successfully raises cancer awareness in partnership with OCA

Muscat – Women’s Badminton Tournament, Season-I, conducted by Women’s Badminton Federation on 18.10.24 at Marvel Sports Club, Ghala; Muscat proved to be a resounding success, raising significant awareness for breast cancer prevention and support. Organized in collaboration with Oman Cancer Association and Marvel Sports Club, the event drew largest number of women participants till date and hundreds of spectators, uniting the community for a powerful cause of spreading knowledge about breast cancer and the importance of early detection. 

The tournament saw enthusiastic participation from women athletes across Oman, who came together to celebrate life, health and resilience. The matches played with high energy and competitive spirit, provided both entertainment and a platform for spreading vital breast cancer awareness.

The event exceeded expectations in terms of both participation and outreach. Over 60 women competed in series of matches in various categories. Special “Mother-Daughter” category was introduced to promote sportsmanship during early age coupled by a unique opportunity to strengthen family bonding. Well-deserved winner’s emerged as tournament champions in various categories after intense final matches. Winners in various categories were as follows-for Mother-Daughter’s – Winner: Anitha & Christie Runners Up- Jessie Joseph & Grace; Doubles B Winners- Meha Gandhi & Sharon; Runners Up-Shilja Vinay & Usha Murli; Singles B Winners- Usha Murli; Runner Up-Amitha; Doubles A Winners- Amrita Menon & Athira Runners Up-Anshu Parihar & Jisha Manju; Singles -A Winner- Athira; Runner Up- Amrita Menon;

Spectators were treated to thrilling games while also being encouraged to engage in meaningful conversations about breast cancer awareness and prevention during an interactive session by OCA representative Ms. Veronica Folasade Ogunsakin and Dr.Abha from Aster Hospital, Muscat to discuss early signs and diagnosis. OCA also offered free mammogram test for the participants and spectators at the event.

The participants were also encouraged to register for upcoming Cancer Walkathon by OCA.

Hence the tournament served as a significant platform for spreading information about breast cancer detection, support resources, and healthy lifestyle practices. Information booths staffed by representatives from Oman Cancer Association offered attendees brochures, educational materials, and opportunities to ask questions about breast cancer prevention and care.

“We couldn’t have asked for a better turnout as it was an effort towards fostering women’s participation in sports,” said the Organizing Team. The event was organized by like minded women Badminton players & enthusiasts- Anshu Parihar, Amrita Menon, Jisha Manju, Shilja Vinay, Lakshmi Iyer and Vani Vineeth; supported by Marvel Sports Club founder Mr.Mathew Thomas. “Seeing these women compete with such passion, knowing they are also here to support such an important cause, is truly inspiring. This tournament has shown how sports can be a powerful vehicle for social impact.”

“This tournament has been instrumental in increasing awareness about the importance of cancer screenings and early detection,” said OCA Representative’s Ms. Veronica Folasade Ogunsakin and Dr.Abha-Aster Hospital. “We are incredibly grateful to the organizers and participants for helping spread this critical message. The funds raised will directly support our ongoing programs for cancer patients and research.”

The tournament successfully raised significant amount through donations, sponsorships, and entry fees. These proceeds will be donated to Oman Cancer Association to support cancer initiatives. Local businesses and sponsors also showed immense support, contributing to both the tournament’s success and the wider cause.

The organizers plan to continue their efforts of fostering importance of physical fitness and sports with social good. “This is just the beginning,” said Organizers- “We hope to grow this initiative year by year, bringing more women participants into sports and making an even bigger impact.”

This year’s Women’s Badminton Tournament has not only provided exciting sports action but also brought the community closer in the fight against breast cancer, proving that together, we can smash cancer and support one another in the process.
