Muscat – Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, in partnership with Oman LNG and Oman India Fertiliser Company – both subsidiaries of Oman Investment Authority (OIA) – signed two financing agreements on Thursday to fund the Maritime History Museum project in Sur with a total investment of RO12mn.
The signing ceremony saw participation of Abdul Salam bin Mohammed al Murshidi, Chairman of OIA, and other dignitaries. Winner of Bilarab bin Haitham Architectural Design Award 2022, the museum is based on a design created by Mohammed Salah al Balushi. His concept reflects Sur’s rich maritime past inspired by the historic gathering of ships in Khor al Battah during the port’s busiest period of trading.
About the agreements, H E Salim bin Mohammed al Mahrouqi, Minister of Heritage and Tourism, stated, “These financial commitments enhance collaboration with sectors that support Oman’s development projects and mark an important milestone for the Maritime History Museum.”
Funding includes RO10mn from Oman LNG and RO2mn from Oman India Fertiliser Company. H E Mahrouqi appreciated the support from the private sector, which he said reflected a shared commitment to social responsibility.

A consultancy contract for design and supervision has been awarded to Ibrahim Jaidah Architects and Engineers, while British firm Haley Sharpe, a leading museum design consultancy, will develop the museum exhibits.
At the signing ceremony, Amer bin Nasser al Mutaani, CEO of Oman LNG Development Foundation, said, “The agreement is part of our commitment to strengthen partnerships that promote the cultural and tourism landscapes of South Sharqiyah, particularly in Sur.”
He added that the museum would contribute to creating new jobs and enhancing local added value, while underscoring the importance of investing in human resources.
The museum will spotlight Oman’s seafaring heritage and ancient trade routes, emphasising the critical role of maritime trade in cultural exchange. It is envisioned as a cultural landmark and educational resource dedicated to showcasing Oman’s history, documenting the unique maritime legacy that has shaped the nation.
