Muscat – Oman stands out as a tourist destination due to its diverse cultural offerings and unique landscape. Besides a range of mountains, big deserts and secret islands, Oman is also blessed with a vast coastline that stretches over 3,000km, of which 1,700km are sun-kissed beaches. What can be done to boost cruise and marine tourism and leverage this vast coastline? Here’s what Muscat Daily readers said –
Mohammad al Busaidi, Government sector employee
Oman has a vast and beautiful coastline, which can be a huge asset for marine tourism. One of the ways to boost it is by developing world-class marinas and ports along popular tourist spots like Musandam, Sur and Salalah. More luxurious cruise terminals would attract high-end tourists. Additionally, offering marine activities like snorkeling, diving and dolphin watching in more locations will encourage cruise operators to include Oman in their itineraries.
Salim al Farsi, Businessman
Oman’s natural beauty is unmatched in the GCC. Its islands and coastline should be promoted more aggressively internationally. Introducing eco-friendly cruises and yacht services that explore lesser-known areas like the Daymaniyat Islands and other secret islands would attract adventure seekers. Collaborating with global travel agencies and offering incentives to cruise companies to operate in Oman could also increase tourist numbers. Also, I suggest making these accessible to all, not just a select few.
Manish Verma, Engineer
To boost marine tourism, Oman needs to focus on improving infrastructure around coastal areas. We should establish better facilities for tourists, such as waterfront hotels, seafood restaurants and guided boat tours. Promoting Oman’s marine heritage, traditional fishing culture and hosting international sailing competitions can also bring more attention to the country as a prime destination for cruise ships.
Nandini Nandakumar, Psychologist
I believe that one of the best ways to boost marine tourism is to have frequent trips for students to the sea. This will encourage not only love for nature but also awareness on the seas. Also, there can be competitions on marine life held by the government.
Ahmed al Lawati, Blogger
Oman’s coastline is perfect for cruise tourism. Developing themed cruises like cultural heritage tours or nature reserve visits will also make Oman a unique destination in the region. By creating exclusive shore excursions that include visits to traditional souqs, forts and deserts, tourists would get a more immersive experience. Also, prices must be reduced.
Kader Khan, Salesman
Oman should focus on highlighting its pristine beaches and rich marine life. A good idea would be to partner with luxury cruise lines and offer bespoke experiences, such as private island tours and water sports at economical prices. Additionally, building awareness through marketing campaigns that focus on Oman’s rich culture, beautiful coastline and traditional hospitality would attract a new wave of tourists to our shores.
