Muscat – An Omani student company has developed an advanced grey water recycling system aimed at providing sustainable solutions for water management in homes and commercial buildings.
The project was one of the winners in the Upgrade programme, supervised by the Ministry of Higher Education, Research, and Innovation, and awarded in July.
Ammar bin Mohammed al Badi, CEO of the project, explained that the concept of recycling grey water emerged in response to growing global concerns about water scarcity and environmental sustainability. “The project aims to reduce fresh water consumption, lower water bills, decrease the environmental impact of water extraction and treatment, and promote sustainable practices in society,” Badi said.

Grey water refers to domestic wastewater generated from household or office activities, excluding toilet waste. The project recycles grey water through an advanced filtration system designed to purify it for safe reuse. This system includes special filters to remove impurities and pollutants, making the recycled water suitable for various non-potable uses.

Badi noted that the project employs biological and chemical treatments to ensure water purity. “This contributes to environmental benefits by reducing fresh water consumption, lowering energy use in water treatment, and decreasing the amount of polluted water discharged into the environment,” he added.

He said that the project exemplifies innovation in environmental sustainability by offering a practical solution to water scarcity. “The use of advanced treatment technologies enables safe and effective grey water reuse, enhancing sustainability efforts.”

To ensure the quality of recycled grey water, periodic tests are conducted using advanced measuring devices that comply with health standards. The quality of operations and results is monitored to meet local and international environmental standards, he informed.
