Haitham bin Nasser Darwish al Azri, 33,  an Omani lensman from Wilayat of Manah, in Dakhliyah governorate, has embarked on a groundbreaking project titled ‘Oman A Majestic Legacy’, utilising drones, to document archaeological sites in Oman.

The project has received official approval and logistical support from the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism and the Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Investment Promotion, underscoring its significance in promoting national development through innovative initiatives led by Omani youth.

In an interview with Muscat Daily, Azri , said the initiative aims to meticulously document and showcase over 430 archaeological and tourist sites across the Sultanate of Oman. Azri’s goal is to provide a fresh and comprehensive perspective on Oman’s rich historical and cultural heritage.

He elaborated on the project’s scope, stating, “The cornerstone of the project is a forthcoming book that presents archaeological monuments and ancient neighbourhoods in a groundbreaking format. This publication will feature high-quality photographs of these sites, complemented by an interactive map highlighting all tourist destinations throughout Oman. This map aims to facilitate navigation and enhance accessibility for tourists and enthusiasts alike.”

He emphasised the project’s dual objective of boosting tourism and attracting foreign investment in Oman’s tourism sector, aligning with the goals of Oman Vision 2040.

“By showcasing Omani archaeological sites in a progressive and visually appealing manner, we aim to stimulate interest among a diverse audience, including local, Arab, and international visitors,” Azri said.

The project’s logo, described as a representation of Oman’s map, integrates a camera lens and a pen, symbolising the meticulous documentation and preservation of Oman’s cultural heritage. The choice of colours and design elements draws inspiration from Oman Vision 2040, reinforcing the project’s commitment to safeguarding the country’s cultural identity.

Azri said he faced a lot of challenges since the project’s inception in 2020, including logistical hurdles involving traveling across different governorates to capture these sites. “Before photographing each heritage site, extensive research was conducted to understand its historical significance,” he said, highlighting the project’s scholarly approach to heritage preservation.

“I photographed numerous castles, forts, and some UNESCO-listed Omani sites over 300 years old, including Bahla Fort, Al Khutm, Al Ayn, the Land of Frankincense, and the ancient city of Qalhat. I also created short videos documenting these historical landmarks.

Reflecting on the challenges, he said, “I knew that reaching these locations wasn’t straightforward. Some roads were rugged, and the weather fluctuated between intense heat and rainy spells. However, with patience and determination, I overcame these obstacles.

Azri expressed the hope for financial support to achieve the project’s ambitious goals by 2026, emphasising its broader impact beyond artistic documentation. This project is an investment in our national identity and a vital contribution to preserving Oman’s cultural memory for future generations, he said.

“The ‘Oman A Majestic Legacy’ project stands as a testament to Omani ingenuity and dedication in showcasing and safeguarding the sultanate’s cultural heritage, poised to leave a lasting legacy for years to come,” he added.
