Foundation stone of Oman’s first hydrogen refuelling station laid

5 May 2024 By OUR CORRESPONDENT

Muscat – Shell Development Oman (Oman Shell) celebrated the foundation stone laying of the first green hydrogen station in Oman on Sunday.

The event was held under the patronage of H E Salem bin Nasser al Aufi, Minister of Energy and Minerals.

Part of the ‘Green Hydrogen for Mobility’ project, the hydrogen refuelling station is located near Muscat International Airport.

The station is expected to contribute to enhancing sustainable efforts, and achieve clean and environmental mobility in Oman, with its opening expected before the end of the year.

The station is expected to produce Oman’s first green hydrogen molecules with on-site production capacity of 130kg of H2 per day.

The station will include a 120kW solar energy system to power the site’s facilities, five fast- charging electric vehicle points, a water recycling system designed to utilise wastewater for landscape irrigation, and a vapour recovery system designed to reduce up to 99% of hydrocarbon emissions.

The station will become the first Shell station in the world to have a hydrogen production plant on site. This will allow maximum energy efficiency and for Oman Shell to be a pace setter in the hydrogen industry in the sultanate.

Oman Shell signed an agreement with Oman Airports in 2022 to give it 15 hydrogen cars and build a hydrogen station near the airport.

In August last year, Hydrogen Systems – an innovation-driven leader in the hydrogen technology sector based in Saudi Arabia – was awarded a contract by Oman Shell to design, develop and instal Oman’s first hydrogen refueling station.

Under the contract, Hydrogen Systems is responsible for the detailed engineering, procurement, quality assurance and control (Factory Acceptance Test) of electrolysers, compression, storage, chilling and dispensing. It will also be responsible for all associated subsystems – utilities, interconnecting piping, safety, communications, electrical, control and instrumentation – for the green hydrogen generation and refueling station.
