Oman win 32 medals at GCC Youth Games

Muscat – Oman won five medals in athletics on the final day of athletics competitions on Saturday, while their chess team snatched three medals on the second day of chess competitions at the GCC Youth Games in the UAE.

Around 3,500 male and female athletes are competing in 24 individual and team games at the games which will go on till May 2.

In athletics on Saturday, Kaltham al Jabri won the silver medal in shot put, Moaayad Al Badri snatched bronze in 400M, Aza al Henaei claimed bronze in 200M. Oman men’s team snatched bronze in  medley relay, while Omani girls also won bronze in medley relay.

Oman’s chess team continued their fine run at Sharjah Cultural Chess Club.

They won three medals – while girls under-14 team won silver, under-18 girls claimed bronze. Omani under-18 boys also won bronze.

In sailing competitions on Saturday, Omani sailors competed for honours in various categories in Optimist, IlKA4 and IlKA6 classes at Abu Dhabi Marine Sports Club despite unstable winds and difficult weather conditions.

In volleyball competitions at Al Nassir Club hall in Dubai Oman lost their opening match to the UAE  15-25, 23-25, 16-25.

Oman put up a fight, but the difference in physical structure, experience and preparation tilted the balance in UAE’s favour. 

In another match Kuwaiti lost to Bahrain 17-25, 13-25, 15-25. 

Oman will meet Kuwait in their second match on Sunday while Saudia Arabia will take on UAE.

Oman under-17 football team suffered a shock 1-0 loss to Kuwait on Friday night at Al Nahyan Stadium in Al Wahda club in Abu Dhabi. Fawaz al Dawood snatched the winner for Kuwait in the 65th minute to win crucial three points. Kuwait lead the table with six points from two games having beaten Bahrain in the opening game.

Oman have three points following their 2-1 win against hosts UAE in the opener. Earlier, UAE thrashed Bahrain 6-1.
