Muscat – The Board of Directors of Oman Olympic Committee (OOC) has recommended honouring the Asian Games silver and bronze medalists, while appreciating the achievements of athletes in the sporting event.

The board – headed by Khalid bin Mohammed al Zubair, OOC Chairman – met on Tuesday to discuss Oman’s participation in the 19th Asian Games, held in the Chinese city of Hangzhou from September 23 to October 8.

Oman showcased its talent in various sports including athletics, sailing, hockey, beach volleyball, maritime sports, shooting, and weightlifting.

A standout moment arrived when sailors Walid al Kindi and Musaab al Hadi clinched a silver medal in the 49 boat competitions, marking a historic win for Oman.

Additionally, runner Hussein al Farsi brought home a bronze in the 800m race, making this the first time for Oman to secure two medals in a single edition of the Asian Games.

Expressing gratitude, the Board acknowledged the dedication of all supporting staff, stating, ‘this achievement stems from immense effort and persistent preparation’.

‘We hope these medals inspire our national teams and other Omani athletes to aim higher in future international events,’ the Board added.

The Board also mandated a thorough review of the athletes’ performances, urging committees to identify challenges faced and provide solutions. A detailed report on this is expected within a month.

Lastly, the OOC’s financial plan and budget for 2024, including provisions for international participation, received approval after a review of the committee’s financial status up to mid-September this year.
