Muscat – The South Batinah governorate witnessed an influx of 15,935 tourists drawn to its rich tapestry of castles and forts during the first half of 2023.
Dr Al Muatasem Nasser al Hilali, director, Heritage and Tourism Department in South Batinah, shed light on the visitor turnout to showcase the success of various measures that the governorate took in the recent years to boost tourism.
The governorate boasts of a total of 11 castles and 46 forts, offering tourists a glimpse into Oman’s storied past.
To make its historical places more attractive, the governorate took up restoration works for various castles and forts.
Hilali informed that Nakhal Castle’s restoration was completed in March 2023, with its management handed over to the private sector for investment purposes.
“We are also focused on injecting fresh lease of life into the Rustaq Castle,” he added.
The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism (MHT) has recently undertaken significant restoration works, with Al Hazm Fort, Barka Fort, and Al Mansour Fort being revamped completely.
These refurbishments, part of the broader strategy of the ministry, are tailored to breathe new life into historical monuments scattered across Oman.
Hilali emphasised the ministry’s commitment to such endeavours, which not only serve to conserve history but also pave the way for invigorated tourism. The ministry is encouraging small and medium size businesses (SMEs), alongside specialised firms, to take the reins of managing and promoting these sites.
“This initiative holds the potential to unlock numerous job opportunities for citizens,” Hilali stated, underscoring the recent agreements such as the usufruct contract for restoration and refurbishment of Nakhal Castle with Nakhal National Company and of Al Khamis Wall and Tower in Musannah wilayat with Hisn Al Khairat Company.
“The strategic move to open castles for investment is not just about heritage preservation. It’s also about bolstering employment opportunities for our citizens,” concluded Hilali.
