Muscat – The Musandam branch of Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry has announced a three-day triathlon championship starting Thursday.
The 2023 Xterra Musandam Championship will kick off with a children’s race on Thursday, followed by a 10km trail run and a 21km half marathon on Friday. The main race, on Saturday, will include a 1.5km swim, a 30km mountain bike race and 11km run.
Announcing the event on Wednesday, Nasser al Hosni, Director General of Musandam Municipality, said, “Musandam was selected as host of the championship after an evaluation and study of the natural infrastructure required to hold such international competitions.”
He added that all necessary facilities will be provided for the success of the championship, which is being hosted by the sultanate for the first time.
Hosni informed that the municipality coordinated with several entities to set up Xterra Village to provide the necessary facilities for participants. The village will also host activities and entertainment events suitable for adults and children alike.
Mohammed bin Khalfan al Obaidani, CEO and founder of Triathlon Middle East Company, said, “We aim to establish Xterra on the calendar of events in the Middle East. We will set up the infrastructure for mountain sports in Musandam, including a mountain track for bicycles and another for running. This will serve as a destination for sports enthusiasts to practise their hobbies in the future.”
According to Obaidani, Xterra is one of the biggest brands among mountain triathlon races and the 2023 Xterra Musandam Championship will combine tourism promotion and adventure sports. “The tournament will help support the tourism sector,” he added.
