Muscat – The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MTCIT) is working to repair roads in all governorates which were damaged during Cyclone Shaheen.

In a statement, MTCIT said, ‘The ministry is continuing to repair roads damaged by climatic conditions, including the Wadi al Hawasna road in Khabourah, North Batinah. Eighty-five per cent of the project was complete at the end of December 2022.’

The project includes repair of 20 sites along the road, besides paving of 60km of the shoulder, nine wadi crossings and box culverts at five sites, the ministry stated.

‘The project aims to provide a safe road network for motorists, and to ensure the sustainability of roads in all governorates. This is in addition to providing services compatible with urban and community development.’

The ministry’s statistics indicate that the total length of roads executed in 2019 was 929km – 514km of single carriage roads, 64km dual carriage roads and 351km graded roads.

According to the Global Competitive Index of the World Economic Forum, Oman’s road network was ranked 14th in 2018. It improved to tenth in 2019.
