Muscat – A zip line project in Khasab, Musandam, has been completed, according to Mohammed al Busaidi, Chairman of Oman Tourism Development Company (Omran Group).

It is Oman’s longest zip line and one of the most significant adventure-related activities in Musandam aiming to attract and stimulate tourism.

Starting at a height of 220m atop Jabal Fitt, it spans a distance of 1,500m, and is a key element of the Adventure Centre project coming up in the governorate.

Speaking to Muscat Daily, Busaidi said, “The zip line is ready. We are just awaiting completion of necessary security and safety tests for the project.”

Work on the project started in 2022 with contractors ensuring that all components were built and installed in accordance with international safety standards and procedures, including an advanced braking system, and helmets, safety harnesses and jackets for riders.

The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism (MHT) is currently overseeing a host of other tourism and development projects in Musandam. A visitor centre is in the plans at the archaeological site of Dibba with funding from OQ company. The project will also include a museum.

There are proposals to establish sites for environmental camps in several areas of the governorate, including Najd, Shamm, Al Hablain, Ghab Ali and Sahah.

According to MHT, Musandam attracted 200,000 tourists annually before the COVID-19 pandemic. The number of visitors to Musandam’s castles crossed 50,000 annually, while the number of cruise passengers was 129,453 in 2019.

Since a Royal Directive issued in 2021 to make Musandam an attractive tourism and investment destination, there has been a push to develop the governorate further.

Following the directive, the Council of Ministers issued a set of decisions to set up a branch of University of Technology and Applied Sciences, establish a reservoir to achieve security in food and medicinal drug stocks, convert the Port of Khasab into a logistics hub, set up specialised economic and tourism zones, and declare Mahas an economic zone with the objective of establishing light and medium industries.
