Muscat – For the second year in a row, Omani freediver Omar Abdullah al Ghailani, from the wilayat of Sur in South Sharqiyah, has won the AIDA Freediving World Cup 2022 held in Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt, from August 2 to 9.

Ghailani claimed gold for his overall performance, plus two more in Constant Weight Bi fins, and Constant Weight categories. Additionally, he clinched two silvers in the Free Immersion and Constant Weight without Fins categories.

Ghailani did Oman proud last year as well by winning the AIDA Freediving World Cup, claiming four gold medals, including overall winner, and a bronze.

Speaking to Muscat Daily, Ghailani informed that the competition saw participation of 23 divers from several countries, including the US, Italy, Brazil, Ukraine, Canada, Austria, Turkey, Poland, France, China, Japan, Kuwait, UAE and Saudi Arabia.

According to Ghailani, the physical challenges he faced were compounded by difficult weather and sea conditions, including high waves. “These factors affect performance.”

Reaching the finals required immense concentration and determination, Ghailani said, adding that he prepared for the championship by training daily.

Elaborating on the sport and the techniques involved, Ghailani said it is performed without the use of any breathing apparatus.

He is keen to continue representing the sultanate at world meets and raising the Omani flag in different countries. “I hope to continue training and take part in international camps to gain more experience.”

He urged Omani youth to practise swimming and diving, as these activities build confidence and enhance personality.
