Muscat – China took a complete takeover of the World Table Tennis (WTT) Contender Muscat 2022 held at Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Muscat.
The championship that started on February 27 came to an end on Saturday with the top seed Liang Jingkun of China taking the singles crown by beating fellow compatriot Lin Gaoyuan.
Pursuing his third WTT Contender Series crown, Liang Jingkun won a a decisive quarter-final over Sweden’s Jon Persson, but the World No.5 was pushed much harder one round later as younger compatriot Xiang Peng eyed an upset. Staring two match points in the face in a nerve-racking sixth game, Liang tapped into all his international experience to turn the tide in his favour, salvaging a dramatic victory from the jaws of defeat (4-11, 11-9, 10-12, 11-6, 6-11, 12-10, 11-6).
Women’s Singles Finals was also an all out Chinese fair with Kuai Man beating Fan Siqi 4-1.
The Indian mixed doubles pair of Manav Thakkar and Archana Kamath clinched a silver medal after losing their final match, as did the women’s doubles duo of Sutirtha Mukherjee and Ayhika Mukherjee on Saturday.
The Thakkar-Kamath duo lost 3-11 3-11 6-11 to the Chinese pair of Wang Chuqin and Chen Xintong in the mixed doubles final while Sutirtha and Ayhika suffered a 6-11 11-8 10-12 7-11 defeat at the hands of Zhang Rui and Kuai Man, also from China, in the women’s doubles summit clash.
