Omani photographer wins gold in international contest

26 Dec 2020 By MOHAMMED TAHA

Photographer Turki Ibrahim al Junibi struck gold in the 4th International Circular of Photography – Autumn Circuit 2020 – held in Serbia Montenegro recently.

Hailing from the wilayat of Masirah in South Sharqiyah, the 34 year old’s photograph simply titled ‘A girl and a book’ won the gold medal in the Open Monochrome category of the online competition.

Speaking to Muscat Daily, Junibi said 259 photographers from 30 countries participated in the competition. “My winning photo shows a girl’s eagerness to learn. I took the black and white photo of the village girl in Kashmir, India, in 2018.”

Junibi started photography in 2016 and joined the Photographic Society of Oman in 2018. He is keen to promote domestic tourism and showcase Oman’s beauty and diversity to the world through his photographs.

“This is my contribution to my beloved country,” he said.

“I love taking photos of people’s faces and their customs, besides   nature,” Junibi informed. “I hope to hold a solo exhibition of my photos soon.”

He takes the difficulties he faces while shooting in his stride. “Reaching some locations while doing nature and wildlife photography need trekking for long over difficult terrain or climbing mountains.”

In efforts to encourage interest and raise awareness on photography, he holds workshops for school students in Masirah.
